What Is Naturopathy?

Naturopathy is a system of healing which means, essentially, “to follow the path of nature.”  It has been practiced for centuries and is directly based on observable scientific principles.  Modern naturopathy grew out of the 19th Century Natural Cure movement of Europe, and was popularized in the U.S. by Benedict Lust. Naturopaths do not practice allopathic medicine, do not prescribe drugs, and do not diagnose or treat diseases. Rather, by using natural, drugless therapies and methods, Naturopaths facilitate the body’s own ability to heal and rebalance itself.  Natural healing methods are non-invasive, safe, and effective.

Natural Health Practices

Natural health providers employ a variety of techniques and methods in their work.  Some of the most common practices include:

  • Acupuncture
  • Ayurvedic Medicine
  • Bioenergetic Medicine
  • Colon Hydrotherapy
  • Detoxification
  • Herbology
  • Homeopathy
  • Iridology
  • Massage Therapy & Body Work
  • Nutritional Wellness
  • Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)

Many states require a State License to practice some of these methods, while other practices are largely unregulated.  It’s important to know the laws in your state, and whether or not a license is required to practice.

Education & Careers in Natural Health

There are many ways to study natural healing.  Both residence and distance colleges offer degree programs in Naturopathy and other disciplines, private institutes and organizations offer shorter training, certificate, and diploma programs in various methods, and experienced teachers and practitioners offer internships and apprenticeships.  Choosing how and where to get your education is as important as choosing a field of study.
