What is the Professional Certification Process?

Professional certification is a voluntary process through which non-governmental professional organizations recognize individuals who have met predetermined standards of education, skill or experience. Certification confirms that the individual is able to demonstrate the mastery of specific knowledge and skills within a particular field of practice—in this case traditional naturopathy or nutritional wellness.

Each applicant for professional certification undergoes a formal process designed to ascertain and acknowledge that he or she has met or exceeded a recognized standard. The individual’s past education and experience, as well as his or her performance on a written examination, determine whether or not certification will be granted. Attributes that influence the value of any certification include:

  • The qualification requirements for taking the examination;
  • Whether the examination meets the accepted psychometric standards for examination development;
  • How the examination is given and scored;
  • How the certifying organization is administered.

Certification is not the same as licensing or registration, although these, too, may involve being evaluated in order to receive credentials. Each type of credential is different and the terms are not interchangeable.

Why Apply to the American Naturopathic Certification Board for Certification?

One of the primary means to demonstrate expertise, enhance visibility, and foster credibility in the eyes of the public is through professional certification. The American Naturopathic Certification Board (ANCB) supports the standards, scope of practice and code of ethics necessary to describe nutritional wellness and traditional naturopathy as distinct approaches to health and wellness. Obtaining certification demonstrates your knowledge and experience to employers, clients, and peers. It also signifies your commitment to continued excellence in the practice of traditional naturopathy. Renewal of board certification is required every two years.

The ANCB (American Naturopathic Certification Board), formerly the American Naturopathic Medical Certification and Accreditation Board (ANMCAB), is the only national certification board for traditional naturopathy in the United States. The ANMCAB certified naturopaths from 1978 through 2003. Now the ANCB continues this mission through a comprehensive certification process.
